The unique vocal sound that is a characteristic of State of Nature is a product of the manner in which the voices of David and Sam harmonize. The sound was something that David discovered quite by accident when they were only thirteen.
Being cousins, the two men grew up together, and ever since they were toddlers, have been very close, more like brothers. From childhood, one of their many common interests has been a love of creating music.
One night, when they were in their early teens, the two stayed up until dawn, composing, performing, and recording an "album" of songs. Later the next day, David listened to the cassette tape. Although the resulting music was mostly horrible, David noticed that occasionally his and Sam's voices combined into a harmony that was quite remarkable. It was a sound that was better than anything he had ever heard, and he knew then that it was their destiny to perform together in a band.
Some might consider that moment to have been an epiphany, but whether it was a divine revelation, or merely a coincidence of fate, this was the beginning of a course of events that would eventually lead to the formation of the State of Nature Band.
